News: Historic Chighizola House Undergoing Restoration in Downtown Mobile
One of Mobile’s most intact 19th-century homes—the Chighizola House at 6 S. Franklin St., just south of the Cathedral Basilica—is now undergoing emergency repairs to stabilize its brickwork and structural elements. The property dates to the 1840s and is considered the “leastaltered and bestpreserved” GreekRevival townhouse in the city. mobilebaymag.com+9mobilebaymag.com+9evendo.com+9.
Contractors Rogers & Willard, led by Mike Rogers, have begun repointing deteriorated mortar, replacing the roof, and planning to discreetly integrate modern utilities—electricity, plumbing, and HVAC—while keeping original features like heartpine floors, pocket doors, and remnants of historic wallpaper intact. Emergency stabilization is expected to wrap up within six months, followed by full restoration to revive the house’s 1850s charm.
Once restored, the Chighizola House will serve as Mobile Bay Magazine’s “Inspiration Home” in early 2026, spotlighting downtown renewal and historic preservation.
